check out PABLO FERRO’S sample reel above of graphic sequences (Graphic Designer & Film Title Designer)
Who did you choose and why? I decided to choose Pablo Ferro because after doing research on him I learned that he taught himself animation and had credits as a director, editor, and producer but is most popular for his title designs. He has worked on some very popular movies like Beetlejuice, Men In Black and one of my favorite’s being Good Will Hunting and according to Stanley Kubrick he is a “Genius”
How would you categorize their work? I would categorize his work as very original and clean but his organic kinetic typography with looks of being hand drawn stand out the most to me. His work I see as someone who has probably utilized all the major genre categories from kinetic typography, a little bit of fluidity, definitely organic, film, collage and vectoring look very present in his works.
My critique using the 7 criteria for Pablo Ferro’s title design works: 1. Structures and Composition
How is the screen space being used? In Pablo Ferro’s title design works for the movies he has worked on I feel that his use of screen space was very clean using all the space on screen and provided a margin to paint a picturistic look.
2. Image and Image Type
What is the nature of the image? The nature of the image type seems like he hand drew particular texts on the screen. What is implied? What’s implied is that it shows his originality and realness showing a connection of the title sequences to what is going to be shown in the movie (a little sneak peek on what is going to come)
3. Symbols and Symbol types
What symbolic forms are being used? Why? Some symbolic forms i noticed was in his opening titles for “Bones” once the title credits were shown the words would break off into pieces of bones. Also in some movies I noticed his use of miss aligning some letters to make it stand out.
4. Time
Analyze carefully the use of time, note the time break for the change/cut/transition. It looks like his timing of each title sequence is anywhere from 3 to 4 seconds long and things either float, zoom or fade in quickly but smoothly at about 1 second in length.
5. Sound
What are the roles of voice, music, and rhetorical sound? From listening to his works sounds like there are a lot of piano used, drums and quick word references announced. Horns are present in some to create a startling jump feel and violins sections are present to feel a free flowing feel.
6. Intent
What is the collective intent of all the visual, sound, and pacing elements? I think the collective intent of all the visual, sound, and pacing elements to show was to make the audience feel that what they are about to see is a very original, appealing and entertaining movie story that they area bout to watch.
7. Meaning
What is the collective meaning of all the visual, sounds and pacing elements? I think the collective meaning of all the visual, sounds and pacing elements shows Pablo Ferro’s branded style of use of hand drawn text and unlined letters presented with the peaceful sounds and pacing allows the audience to have a true meaning of getting preparing or gearing up for the adventure and getaway that they will experience from the start to the end of the movie.
Finally, thinking back to my Typography in Motion project. Now that we’ve discussed grouping layers, how would you build your project differently?Would grouping have made your project easier to manage?
Finally, thinking back to my Typography in Motion project “Slow & Fast” and “Happy & Sad”. Now that we’ve discussed grouping layers, how would you build your project differently?
Thinking back to my Typography in Motion project I think that for the first pair “Happy & Sad” I think that I could of utilized the technique of parenting and child relationships, nestling it into a precompostion and I could duplicate it to get a more sunny look as well as a raining look feel at the end of the video. Also, utilizing the parenting and child when I placed the eyes into motion in the happy and sad sections. The way I would of build the project differently would be to create precomps for the sections and piece it into the entire project.
For the first pair “Slow and Fast” I think I would of build it the same way I originally did but I would try to make the fast move even more faster to a point where it shakes left to right more i think.
Would grouping have made your project easier to manage?
I think grouping would of help me to manage more on the “Happy & Sad” project even more than the “Slow & Fast” project because I had more elements like the eyes and happy and sad looks joining together at a particular point and the creations of the Sun and Raining look feel with the words would of helped if I duplicated and grouped it all into a nested pre-composition. Where in my “Slow & Fast” project audio played a very important role in the overall feel but for the look I think i could of parented and child the “slow and fast” in one particular section when the car audio, kiss audio and harley audio came into pay because I noticed when I was doing assignment for week 9, that one moves faster than the other. Then I could have also added the shaking look to to make the fast look faster.
In the Skateboardanimation motion graphics video the screen space was used well by taking up the entire screen to present a setting that was pretty creative used by basic scraps of pieces of items on what would be a desk. The space is being used by the effects of a skateboarder, skateboarding right before your eyes on from a turntable record player, to your desk, from the images of skateboarding on text books it uses the screen space in an effective way to make it seem the skateboarder skating boarding all in a room and all the items in the room.
2. Image and Image Type
What is the nature of the image? What is implied? I think the nature of the image shows that skateboarding is something that can be when visualized is an act that can be imaginable on a desk and text book setting within a room and that it implies that skateboarding is as imaginable and dangerous in any type setting.
3. Symbols and Symbol types
What symbolic forms are being used? Why?
I think that some of the symbolic forms being used are that everything from textbooks and cardboards symbolized as outdoor steps and paper clips taking the place of handle rail bars on steps.
4. Time
Analyze carefully the use of time, note the time break for the change/cut/transition.
The time in the skateboardanimation I noticed each shot last for about 3 to 4 seconds on each shot and the transitions go from right to left and left to right , vice versa.
5. Sound
What are the roles of voice, music, and rhetorical sound?
The roles of the music and rhetorical sounds played an important part in the belief that the skateboarder was really skateboarding on the text books (in this cause symbolized cement steps) by the sound of the skates crashing on to the cement pavement like it was really skating even on the railings sounded real. The sounds of the camera snapping played the role like it felt that a real photoshoot was taking place on the desk of text books, record player cardboards and paper clip railings
6. Intent
What is the collective intent of all the visual, sound, and pacing elements?
I think the collective intent of all the visual, sound and pacing was to show that one can imagine the realness of skateboarding and one can visualize themselves skateboarding anywhere especially in a room where one can imagine themselves skating in their room on objects within their setting, in this case a room with a desk and record player.
7. Meaning
What is the collective meaning of all the visual, sounds and pacing elements?
I think the collective meaning is that skateboarding can be done in any setting even imaginative and meditatively in any setting and with any objects. Its so real that any object can be a meaningful object to skateboard on when you use your imagination.
